Local resources
Hawaii Early Intervention Information and Referral Line (Formerly known as H-KISS) - If your child has been identified as deaf or hard of hearing, is under three years old, and you are not yet involved with Early Intervention, you can call the referral line. They will refer you to the appropriate Early Intervention agency for evaluation and services. Be sure to check out the link to their brochure at the top of their webpage.

Early Intervention Section - Early intervention in the state of Hawaii provides services for children up to age 3. This state page has general information about eligibility and services.

Department of Education - This link has general information about special education eligibility and services. The DOE provides services to children in need of specialized instruction starting at age 3. If your child is 3 or over, and not enrolled in public school, you may call H-KISS (see above) to find out what your home school is. You may then request an evaluation for eligibility. If your child is already attending school and you suspect he or she requires specialized interventions, speak to your child's teacher or Student Services Coordinator.

Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind - Hawaii Department of Education offers this an an option for students who use American Sign Language to communicate. It is a day school with residential option for children who live too far away to commute.

Learning Disabilities Association of Hawai`i - LDAH provides training, direct parent support, and outreach. If you have questions about the law, they probably have the answers.

Guide By Your Side - You may have heard of the Hands & Voices GBYS program, which pairs an experienced parent with one just beginning the journey. At this time, our Hawai`i chapter does not have this program established.
Other groups and programs
American Society for Deaf Children - This is a national organization which provides resources to families and providers. If you join, you get their quarterly journal, The Endeavor.

National Association of the Deaf - NAD is a civil rights organization by and for individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing.
